Post How To Fix A Leak

My SBC developed a leaking pan gasket shortly after I dropped the engine in this summer. I have been putting the repair off. The motor sits so low in the mount that there is not enough room to lower the pan to replace the gasket....I have to raise or remove the engine to do the job. So I stripped everying off the engine, headers, carb, accessories etc. Raised the truck and put it on stands. I thought, I better drain the oil,did that and pulled the filter off. Hooked the chain hoist on...Ready to lift.

I thought I noticed a loose pan bolt....it was barely finger tight if that. I check others, they were all finger tight! Gasket compression for sure.

But do you think that if a pan was leaking that the first thing to check might be the bolts that hold it on? It was a nice afternoon of recreation in the garage. Tomorrow I put everything back together. Thank god I don't make my living this way!

That seems awfully familiar - have we ever been in the same garage together?

At least you won't have trouble getting to the pan bolts to tighten them.

What could be better than rolling around in oil? Maybe that's why dogs roll in the dust.
