Guys
I just got a new 68GTO, and it has an older radiater, how hot is too hot, its a 400cube with a 400 turbo tranny. It hit 210 yesterday in very hot weather, what is the high end of safe for the temp? Thanks Jon |

I run my car @ 210 all day long in good old B'field 100F weather. It won't hurt the engine to run that hot but your cooling system needs to be in good shape to handle it (good hoses, 50/50 coolant, 13# radiator cap).

I'll have to agree with 36willys, 210 with a crossflow and a good system is not too hot, the coolant won't boil at these temps with a sealed system. I live about 80 miles north of 36, 102 today, 210 all day long.

210 is safe and the trans will run much hotter than that. If it bothers you get an aftermarket trans cooler and plumb it inline in front of the rad, this will reduce the heat load on the coolant system somewhat.

I use 2 cans of Water Wetter, water and aprox 1 lt of anfifreeze (to help inhibit corrosion) and a 160 t-stat. It rareley sees the high side of 200 on a hot day (95 deg or hotter). Usually runs 180-190 in hot ambient temps, and 180 when is cooler than 80 degs out. Water will disperse heat better than antifreeze. Water Wetter helps and inhibits rust and lubes the waterpump.

Is everyone talking about PONTIACs? Pontiacs generally run hotter than Chevy Motors and 210 is fine. I would recommend a separate trans cooler, though. Add some water wetter and an aftermarket trans cooler. Temp should be right around 205-210 all day long. No problems.

My 428 is running at around 210 and have not had any problems. It does get hotter than that when I slow to "parade" speed. I changed the water pump and put on a 16# cap and a 180 high performance t-stat. It runs a little cooler but not much. If it gets to hot it is very difficult to restart.
The most important thing I did was to move the temp sending unit from the head to the intake manifold. Before that I was getting really high temp readings and the water did not measure that hot on my termometer. Trans work better with hot fluid so don't cool it off to much with a trans cooler. |
