How to judge engine wear
 

A neighbor of mine has a 350 chev that i'm thinking of buying. But him nor i know how much wear it has. He doesn't know how many miles the wrecked camero he pulled it from had, and he has used it some since. Is there a way to determine wear without major disasembly?

Lift the valve covers and look for sludge. Check out the oil that's in it, if any. Check the condition of the spark plugs. Why not just pull the heads off it and really get a good look?

Vacuum gauge, reading manifold vacuum at idle says a lot about condition of valves, rings, ignition.
