How to keep rust off my chromed wheels

I've got a set of wheels with thinning chrome that develops rust spots very easily. Is there something I can put on the wheel to protect it so I don't have to polish it all the time? Maybe a clearcoat or something?

keeping rust off chrome

One technique I have used for years that seems to work well is putting a layer of automatic transmission fluid on the chrome and let it sit for a day or so and then clean the excess off with a dry rag. This seems to have the added bonus of removing some rust without damaging the finish. Just make sure not to let it get on the tire itself.
Hope this helps.
