How to keep thread from unwinding off spool?

I've got a couple of spools of thread now, and they seem to like to uncoil down around the base when not in use.

Any hints on storing spools properly?

The spools I have have a small notch to catch the free end of the thread when not in use...

I don't know what size spools you have, but larger spools have a plastic insert in the top center of the cone. I pull out the insert and catch the end of the thread between the insert and the cone. You could also use a wide rubber band.
