How Long Should PS V-belt Last?

The PS belt on my engine is 6 years old with 17,400 miles driven on it, and squeals at startup. It is a 44.5 inch belt and I can't tighten it any more. I estimate I have moved the reservoir about 1/8 to 1/4 inch over that time frame to keep it tight enough to not squeal.

The next shorter belt is 44.0 inches and I might not be able to get it over the pulley system.

Do these belts stretch or wear down with time such that it just needs to be replaced with the same size belt?

John

At 6 years old, you should replace the belt. Even though it only has 17K miles, the rubber in the belt hardens as the belt ages.

Does the belt sit all the way in the pulley groove?
THere are different belt widths and pitches.

New belt , not smaller and you should be fine. I change mine out every 2 years no matter what. and the old one goes in the trunk with a wipe down of silicone. just for a spare.

I had the same problem ,mime had a 44.5 x15mm wide ,I switched to a 44 x 13 wide it sits deeper in pulley to stop squeal so I has to be slightly shorter.

The top of the belt is slightly below the top of the pulley rim. It definitely does not seat in the bottom of the groove.

Replaced belt with exactly the same belt today and it is much tighter. Apparently, belts either wear down or stretch.
