The computer is not needed to make the trans go into overdrive and have the converter lockup. There is a pretty easy electrical connection that needs to be done though, company's like B&M or TCI have a kit to make it work. You can use the search tab at the top of the page to find additional info. This has been discussed in detail before, try something like "converter lockup".
You will also need to hook up the TV cable, that info can also be found by using the search tab.

I have a 700r4 in my 58.My valve body is set up to lock the converter when it goes into 4th gear.I have over 500hp so this is ok for me.They make a vacuum valve that goes in the manifold and it locks the converter when cruising in overdrive. Most people use a toggle switch and manually lock the converter when on the highway and unlock it in town.I had my transmission built by Expert Transmission in Henderson Nevada. You can get the parts you need from jegs.If you look through the old posts in the transmission section you should find this information. If you go to the hotrodders lounge look up the post"55 to 59 chevy truck owners"you will find that there are allot of guys with these trucks that can help you with this project.
