Post How to make exhaust just a little less noisy?

I have a 327 with headers, about 4 feet of pipe, Edelbrock high flow muflers, then about 2 1/2 feet of pipe ending right at the end of the body. This set up is just a little to loud for my liking. I thought I would install an 18 inch extention on the end with a resonator. Would this quit the engine down a little? Anyone had experience with resonators??

Jim have you considered just changing to different mufflers? Are you concerned about extra backpressure, you're not racing it are you? Just wondering where you're at with the situation.

Resonators work really well at getting rid of the higher frequency sound you hear from the exhaust. If the lower frequency sound bothers you more, a higher restriction muffler is the only alternative. I would try the resonators first and if it is still too loud change to a factory style muffler.

adding a balance tube in front of mufflers will quiet it down some and also increase horsepower a little

No I am not racing the car. It is just a street rod to have fun with. I just put these mufflers on there. Someone told me extending the tail pipes might help some because some of the sound maybe resonating off the body. I have seen some extentions you can simply put on the end of the pipe. Some had resonators on them and some didn't. It would be a lot of trouble to replace the mufflers so I was hoping if I put the extension on the end with the resonator it might make it a little less noisy. Its only anoying at a certain rpm when accelerating. All other times its ok.

Hi Jim, just my opinion but I have flowmasters with 2 1/2 pipe on my mustang. It extends past the back of the car and still resonates through the car. I would have to say just extending the pipes won't do too much, try the resonators or new mufflers.

JIm, dude, If ur [pipes are coming outunder your car at all there is going to be some serious rumble and it may be a little better on the highway or interstate where the underflow will be equal to teh task of smooth flow. But I suggest you single the exhaust up if you are lookng for a smooth sound, or else, put on fresh cheapie mufflers every month and exhaust behind your back tires sideways when rolling the sound will be altered by thr broken air around the tire. At teh back of the car, teh sound will be invariably caught in an inverted cavitation, elevating it to ear level. It's (behind the tires)the best sound protection you can get. you can also wrap your pipes with flam-retardant mono-spray and heat tape. That will take awaty some of the rumble that is transferring from the tightened pipes to your ambient sensory. Like, the overall feeling of rumble may be what you don't appreciate and be looking to be rid of...Rather than just teh sound...what can I remember. It's not easy when you're dead.

bullheimer I'm one of those straight pipe bikers your mentioning up there. I love my bike and I like my pipes, it the only way people know when we are around, you try driving with 7 non driving people that never check their mirrors and end up running us off the road. Then when we try to get ahead of anyone we get busted for wreckless driving, so next time your out on the road take it out on the dumbasses that can't drive not the bikers with the straightpipes that are only making up for others irrespnsability and shortcomings.

yeah, i knew that was coming. i got my motorcycle license when i was 14-those were the days-back around '69. i know from whence you speak when you talk about stupid drivers "not seeing you" and even those that purposely swerve into you. don't have a ride now-actually do have a 41 indian that needs a lot of stuff to run-but a couple years ago took my 750 to puerto rico. holy crap, if you think it's dangerous here, oh my God! still, in the states there wasn't a single day that went by that someone didn't pull into my lane. never ever ride in a car's blind spot. as for the pipes. i think there are alot of other great sounding & LOUD pipes out there with mufflers on them, i don't see why so many bikers use drag pipes or why they are even legal when i can get a ticket for driving a car that's too loud. i live 200 feet from hwy 20 and i can hear these guys inside my house all day long. it used to be okay until everyone and their dogs started riding hogs. i KNOW this is slightly hypocritical, since a V-8 can never be too loud in my opinion, but i put v-twins in the same catagory as 4 bangers with fart pipes. except i actually do like the sound of a bike at lower volume, something i cant say about an accura. and if that's your reason for being loud, i can at least understand that, but i know there's lots more bikers out there that are just loud for louds sake. For jim weeks, thanks for the advice on the gas tank. sorry i'm not too serious about your prob, my truck's glass packs drove me crazy on a 1 hours drive-mainly cause my stereo couldn't drown it out. i'll never put glass packs on anything again-ugh!
