how to make a rearend jig.

Well..... as the title says. How do you make a jig for making rearends. I want to make another 8.8 Ford rearend for my gbody. I wanna center the pinion and make sure everything is dead on to the 7.5. I realize this will mean cutting the axle tubes but that's fine I plan on making an alignment jig... and it also means aftermatket axles... thanks!

Take a look here for an idea of what's involved. Not so much a jig as a set of alignment dummy axles and different housing end bushings to keep things straight/aligned.

Haha that's actually one of the first links that popped up from Google. I was gonna have my machinist make those hubs for me that go on the axle ends and in the carrier bearings and see where I can get a bar for it. But I wanna make a jig for lining up all the brackets on the rearend.

Can anyone give me some tips and pointers who have made jigs before... I figured I would take the 7.5" rear end and make the jig hold it on the center of the pinion flange and center of the axle flange... Then make brackets that bolt to all the control arm mounts.. Then when I set the ford 8.8 into place I can trim all the brackets until they fit the mounts i made.... Am I even close?

Sounds good to me Zil.

I already started sketching out the base of the jig. I'm gonna use the alignment jig to hold the axle center on the bracket jig. Now I just gotta get ahold of some steel. Do you guys use any special steel for the alignment jig bar. I figured a 1" round piece of steel should work but not sure if it has to be any special grade steel.

Naaa, no special grade for the Shaft, it only has to align the tubes/ends.

Mine is just a piece of 1" round bar stock called TGAP(Turned, Ground, and Polished)that I got off of the leftovers rack at work, but plain old 1" round cold rolled bar stock would be just fine.
