how much can the handle?

How much stress can the stock 8.5" 10 bolt out of a 77 monte carlo drive shafts in the rear end handle ? I want to run 3:42 or 3:73 with a locker or posi unit. Just for future reference.

The 8.5" rearend should be able to handle 400h.p., maybe a little more if you are running street tires and an automatic! Maybe a little less if you are running a manual and 11.5" slicks!

Low77ride,

According to an article in Chevy High Performance magazine, the 8.5" 10 bolt is almost as strong as the venerable 12 bolt.

Now thats a dilly of a pickle but i geuss so because the 12 bolt's ring gear is only 8.6" ..... Someone correct me if im wrong but the only difference is the pan and maby the vehicle weight load.

what does everyone think about the 8.5" 10 bolt running about 550 fps of torque with 3:73 posi locker new bearings and seals and stock axels with new studs with 245 street tires ??? Think it can handle that much?

Should be ok with street tires. Slicks may be iffy. we broke one in a 10.8 sec Monza drag car (3000#). Had it welded a couple of times then got rid of it.
