I am just starting out in learning how to paint.I have a truck that i want to paint myself.I have a Devilbiss JGA 502 and all i hear is that "Its a good primer gun".I understand that tip sizes matter, i dont dispute that.But how much is "technique" a factor? Can you just make adjustments at the gun to do primer and bc/cc?

I primed the interior side of the door yesterday and then also put a basecoat on.It seemed to go on really good.I did have to make some adjustments to spray the color.And it was a metallic.I thought i was going to really mess it up.It was the first time i sprayed a metallic.I have not tried to spray a clearcoat.I am not going to cc my interior.I want the semi gloss finish that the bc has.

Technique means a lot. Get a semi gloss clear for the interior. Base coat is not designed to be left uncleared.

You'll need to clear that basecoat, basecoat has no UV protection and also is not very durable, a satin clear like suggested would do the trick. That JGA502 can get all of your painting done but you'll need some higher air pressures with todays high solids clears and this will make for a lot of overspray.

there's nothing wrong with your gun. It's just older technology, so you'll use more paint. The new HVLP guns put less paint in the air and more on the car. Your gun with a nice 40-50# at the gun air-pressure should produce a fine finish, and if not hey you can cut-n-buff.
