how much oil in a stock chevy pan with the filter full

5. The pans holds 5 full up to the top. The filter steals a half quart out of that, and thats where you want to be.

How much oil

A stock oil panned SBC from the 70's and 80's with a filter would hold about 5 quarts with the filter. When I put a chrome stick in my engine I put in 5 quarts, ran the engine for a minute, pulled out the stick and made a mark at the oil level with a hacksaw.

I think it depends on which pan you use. If I'm not mistaken some pans only held 4. I seem to recall my friend building a 350 with a passenger side dipstick and that pan was only designed to accommodate four quarts.
