how much oil for a 79 SBC 350

i just put a 79 350 into my 82 grand prix but the dipstick was on the wrong side runing into the manifold meaning i need a new one and i found a universal one that will work but you need to adjust it for the engine and i have no oil in the engine currently to compare with the new dip stick so i gota put in the correct amount of oil and adjust the stick from there.

does anyone know the correct amount? i heard 5 quarts is that right?. but is that just quarts or US quarts? reason i ask about that is when i convert that to litre that us Canadians use, its a 1 litre(bottle) differnce.

Thank you

Don't forget to run the motor long enough to fill the oil filter up before you mark the stick.

instead of doing that...

fill up the oil filter then install it and then add the oil and then start the engine....I always fill up the oil filter before installing it then add 4+ quarts to the fill line of the stock fill tube...then remove the stock fill tube and mark your aftermarket fill tuibe. You can bend the stock fill tube to miss your exhaust...your going to replace it anyway!!.
