I'm about to install a dana 70 in my 49 Dodge Route Van. I chose this rearend because, I had it already, it's rebuilt, it's a dually and the truck is big and heavy.

I need to narrow the rear to fit under the vans fenders. I've heard you can drill out the plug welds, cut and reweld the tube, install the shortened axle and you're done.

Anybody done this, have advice, warnings? I'm a pretty fair shadetree mechanic, but this is one I haven't tried before.
