race removal
i have done a few bearing changes and have never been able to reuse the race.. bearings are too cheap to try and reuse them.. too many chances of dinging it or out of round and then your screwed.... i'd just beat it out carefully and replace them.. but thats my op...

I have seen hubs w/o acess slots to get the race started, but rarely.
Using a sharpened brass drift, shaped w/a "bologna slice" on the end will usually get it started- if there's some lip to get a purchase on. After you get the race out, I'd suggest you grind a few access slots into the hub for 'next time'. If that won't work, you'll need to go in (after the hub has been thoroughly degreased) w/a Dremel and grind an access slot on at least two sides to get it out w/o distorting it. I would tend to agree that reusing the bearing race isn't the best idea, though- but that said, I have done the exact same thing before. After the race is pressed back into the spotlessly clean and deburred hub, be sure to check the bearing for smoothness. |

thanks cobalt,
Cut a couple access slots in hub...sounds like a good idea. I plan to make access slots small as possible 180 degrees apart. I don't suppose it will significantly effect hub balance since imbalance near center of rotation and mass of material removed is relatively small? |

new races w/ old bearings?
I have brand new inner and outer races.
I have low mileage (maybe 5000miles) like new USA wheel bearings. I've always changed races and bearings w/ no problems. My dad normally changed bearings but not races w/ no problems. Will the used bearings likely seat in the new races OK? |
