Open it about half way ,remove the support arms ,and theres a notch at the hinge ,line up the notch and pull the gate off ,no tools...

Deadbodyman, did GM have that system that far back? I've had Fords, and have a 77 now. Before I modified it, and other older fords I had, you had to remove the 2 bolts holding 1 of the pivots to the box and lift it off.

Have done a few of the 67 to 72 Chevy's...as far as I know, your right Mike, that's the way I've taken them off...I'm not sure about the older ones but fairly confident that, as you said, about half way open, unhook the hinge and slide the gate our when the notch lines up.

Should be easy to tell just run your finger around the lower mount and if there's no opening in it you have to remove the two bolts holding one of the lower cams on to remove.

Maybe GM was ahead of Ford, or had that idea patented. I had a 69 Ford F250 Camper Special, and every time I put the camper on I had to unbolt the hinge to get the tailgate off. Was a real pain. With the 77 F100 I'm working on I modified the gate to slide of 1 side like the newer ones because I tightened up the gaps and the way I had there wasn't going to be enough room to get a wrench in there to remove the bolts.

69 widetrack your right. All he needs to do is open the gate and look at the hinge.

You need to remove the bolts that hold the hinge to the tailgate. GM didn't start using the quick removal mount on the right side of the truck until 1975.
