how to set my timming

on my 300 6 cylinder I went to set my timming on my truck with a timming light and the notch on the harmonk balencer is't there what do I do because one time I would just loosen the distributor and turn it untill it sounded right but I turned the timing to high and started breaking starters, and I really don't know what year model the motor is because it is'nt the original motor that come in it, and I went through 8 starters that came from o'reilly before I reilized the timing was to high, so about 4 half months ago I pulled the timming down and pulled a starter off a 69 351 windsor and it works pretty good but the timming is still not right can any body help me.

If you're sure you have the timing lite connector on the #1 plug wire the outer ring on the harmonic damper may have spun/slipped. If so you need a new damper before it comes loose and flies through the hood or radiator.
