Can anyone please give me a Step By Step Process on how I can start a Chevy 327 Engine when its out of the car, so I can ensure it runs before I buy it?
The easy answer is to make the seller run it for you as a condition of purchase..Or if it don't run you get your money back..
If you want to do it you self, down and dirty. just mount it on a engine stand, install a flexplate and starter. hook up a switched 12 volt power source to the ignition and a fuel can to put the suction hose of the fuel pump in... and fire it up for 20 or 30 seconds... it would be ok to run it with out water for a short period of time... If you want to run it for 30 minutes then you need a rad, fan and coolant...
Unless you have all this laying around it's probably more work then just installing it into the car, unless it's going in some hateful chassis that is a hassel to install an engine into?????
You can pour a little gas down the carb throat and crank it up just to see if it runs, but don't run it for more than a few seconds. Be sure there's something holding the throttle shut, or at least almost shut. If it's open, or if the carb's off, it could easily over-rev and blow itself up.
I saw one guy hold the throttle open and spray a few little spurts of starting fluid down the carb while I cranked it. Every time he sprayed, it revved up.
