how to test torque converter out of car?
my 93 z28 was making a loud whining sound from the transmission. it would go away when in gear but made noise when in neutral. then when you turned it off it sounded like there was something broke in the converter ratting around in there. it shifted fine and everything and i pulled out the trans last night and I would like to know the torque converter is broke before i buy another one. 4th gen f body's are not the easiest car to work on.
O and im at my grandfather house 400 miles away from my house so i need to fix it to drive back. thanks all |

not an expert, but it sounds more like a pump problem.

X2^^^, check the easy things 1st.
Could be Flexplate or Torque Converter. If the Pumps whining, the sound will get slower, faster, louder or quieter but, wont stop when put in gear. If it's the TC, there's metal flying around inside and going into the Trans. |

You sound like you may have a broken sprag in the converter w/o seeing or driving it's a shot in the dark. Two things you can do is take a pair of external snap ring pliers and reach inside hub then grab the splined portion then pick it up and down to check end play it should be no more than .020-0.030" if it's more the thrust washer is probably gone if that checks out put you finger down inside the hub and try to turn that splined part (that's the sprag) it should turn in only one direction. If your not sure bring it to your local trans shop and they'll probably check it for free.

Ah so a TC can make that sound, good to know. I also like the fact that it was explained how to tell the difference. Thanks for that tid bit.
