How to wire up a tach??

Hey guys quick question. Say my car doesn't have a tachometer. How would I go about wiring one up to a gauage?? I believe I just need to wire it into one of the cylinders ignitions wires in the distributor?? Any and all advice appreciated!!

The aftermarket tachs attach to the coil, switched 12v, ground, and a light circuit. The only tach I've seen attach to an ignition wire is the tach pickup for a scope.

My HEI has a wire terminal that is labeled for TACH. It just plugs in and you run a power wire to the battery and off you go. I never used the light on mine though. Works fine for me.
