Huge!! Power Steering Leak
I have a March Revolver pulley system on my 454 that has a Saginaw power steering pump and has been a thorn in my side for two years now.
The set-up has the alternator/pwr steering and mech H2O pump on a serpentine (454). It exploded all over the inside of a fresh engine and paint. I think the pump is a Saginaw P300. It was thought to have been leaking at the fittings on the high pressure side and they were replaced, only to think it must be the pump (brand new) from March. I ran it with dry rags around the pulley and fittings. The result was a leaking seal right behind the pulley itself....keeping in mind it is new pump.
Once I replace the pump again (from March), it seemed to work (I ran it for a few miles - perhaps 50).
Well yesterday was dyno day and the 454 performed VERY well, and no issues were present.
On the ride back home about 50km from the city I heard a slight squeaking. Checked under the hood before taking my son for a BD dinner and TaDa..Power steering fluid EVERYwhere. I have spent hours cleaning, cause the paints and polish finishes degrade (missed his dinner) and it has happened again.
This makes both Saginaw pumps leak from the exact same spot. Not to mention I only put about 100 miles on it since it last went Mt. St. Helens on me.
Is there a better pump out there that can fit? I think March re-manufactures, then sells the pumps. What are the odds that everyone of them EXPLODES? Can a different front seal that actually works be had? Does the pressure relief valve have some issues, cause I know I am starting too? Please help. I have it to drive, not wash!!:embarrass:mad::(

Most of the Saginaw pumps are about the same.
Contact AGR or KRC about a replacement.
Going on the assumption the leak is at the seal behind the pulley and not from the high pressure fitting or lines, have you looked at the belt tension as a possible cause?
Are the pulleys in perfect alignment so there's no fore or aft pressure put on the pump?
Are you using any type of P/S cooler?
Are the lines of adequate size? No restrictions?
Did they or did you supply the rear pressure/bypass spring and fitting? Does it match the type of steering gear you're using (box or rack)?

1. Yes it's a nice set-up indeed. When the ps is not all over it. To clarify, after it was cleaned this time - I place dry paper towels around the fittings and another behind the pulley of the p.s. I added some fluid to the empty res and after running it while turning stop to stop it leaked around the shaft seal. I initially thought it was fibers off the paper towel, but realized it was fine oil being slung around from the pulley.
Belt tension is good. Just got her off the dyno yesterday (and they had no issues). Belt had to be snugged after the pulls, but seems good now.
2. Alignment was check when belt was snugged up.
3. No P/S cooler.
4. Line sizes are hp and have #6 to 1/2-20 Inverted Flare, [IMG][/IMG]3/4" nut not sure of the exact size...see pics
5. Rear press./bypass spring came assembled. Not sure if it matches the steering box gear...never dug that deep.
