Hurst Indy 4-speed shifter

i got this shifter for christmas and i have a question about it. is it just a regular shifter that follows a regular H shift pattern? because it doesn't move from side to side only a very small amount to the left. or is it one of those shifters the you just move straight forward and backward throught the gears following more of an I pattern?

i also have another question but not about the shifter its about my tranny. i just bought it. i was told it was a saginaw but it doesn't have the 3 holes that the shifter bolts to. it has the little raised spots where the holes should be but no holes?

thanks

The Hurst Indy is an H-pattern shifter. Ifyour trans doesn't have any holes in the tailshaft housing to bolt on the shifter plate, Hurst used to make a bracket that bolted to the rear of the main case and tailshaft housing to accomodate for this type of trans. You can contact them to see if this type of bracket is still available.

It would help if we knew what kind of car it is in. Might be the original tranny.

Hurst makes an installation kit for just about all of their shifters. The Saginaw I'm using came out of a Trans Am. The original shifter was mounted way back on the tailshaft of the trans and had several factory brackets and spacers that mounted it on. I installed it and it did OK but I wanted the shifter farther forward in the truck so it would clear my center seat and look better too. I bought a new competition plus shifter with the correct installation kit for a Saginaw/pickuptruck setup. The new mount is farther forward on the trans and fits like a dream. The new mount has a bracket with a big U bolt that goes around the tailshaft of the tranny.

thanks for the info, there is a small machine shop right next to my dads shop that will properly drill and tap the holes for very little or no money at all so thats probly the direction im headed to. my saginaw has the shifter mounting holes at the bottom of the tail shaft right under where the 3 that in need would be.

I use the Indy shifter in my Beaumont with a saginaw. I have a mounting bracket that bolts to the trans and the shifter bolts to the mounting bracket.
Its an ok shifter, short throws. I installed shift liminter stops on it for a little added insurance. It does take a bit of effort to move it left. There is also a pretty strong indent for reverse. It is an H pattern with reverse left and up.

It was in the car when I bought it (car that is), but your question is probably directed at super chevy, so never mind

Steve....What year is your Beaumont? I had a 68 327 4speed. The shifter was mounted on the trans crossmember. When you really wound it out, the engine/trans would torque over and the shifter would lock up. You couldn't pull it into the next gear. Loved that car though. The saginaw had a great 1st gear.

1965, 406 sbc. Check my photo album. It was originally a 6 cylinder, 3 on the tree car. The guy I bought it from said it had a Rock Crusher. He was a friend so I trusted him. Turns out its a Saginaw and he thought it was a Crusher because it was very hard to shift. Its amazing what a little bit of gear oil can do to a stiff shifting trans. Its holding up pretty good to 470lb ft of torque so far (no traction). It had a 300 horse 327 but thats another story.

thanks for the info, it does seem very hard to move to the left. are the shift limiter stops something separate? the shifter i really want is the hurst v-gate inline shifter with the separate shifter for reverse. my buddies dad has a 68 beaumont with a 500hp 383 stroker, robin egg blue, it looks almost stock, very cool sleeper.

indeed it did, but it didn't come with instructions to install it on a saginaw, only a pre 69 muncie, 69 & later muncie, borg warner t-10, and borg warner T-10 74 and later. is it the same to install one on a saginaw? it says on the box that it works with a saginaw. im not sure as to which arms i am supposed to use becuase the kit comes with a bunch.

I really don't know about the INDY shifter. The pictures i've seen of it looks like the shifter part is like the Competition Plus. I know the arms are the worst problem to figure out. Hurst really doesn't have the best instructions in the world. I'm real glad mine only had 3 rods with it. I'd really hate to have had too many to pick from. I do know there can only be one right way for it to go on. What I would do is take the stick off and try to put one arm on and see where it should be mounted. Hurst/Mr Gasket website doesn't really show that shifter on the instruction page looks like it's gonna be trial and error. It looks like the indy shifter for a saginaw should be 503 0033
