Hello
My sons tell me that you folks can help me. My husband is building a 56 Ford truck. He is about to put the truck "together" and is in need of a steering column and wheel. I haven't a clue where to look or what to buy. I would like to surprise him. This truck is six years in the making. I want to do the right thing. Can you please suggest companies that may be able to help? Are there things that I need to know about the truck in order to purchase these things?
Thank-you so much
You would need to know if he is restoring the 56 F-100 back to original specs or if it is a modified truck ...
Either way ... you need to know if it is automatic transmission or manual shift. AND ... it could be either column shifted or floor shifted. He could also want tilt column ... if he is going modified truck.
The type steering box is also a factor ... and the length of the column ...
What you are trying to do is great ... BUT I suggest making him a " Gift certificate " for the column of his choice ... and then paying for it ... when he gets it.
Hi, I have a 56 myself, but mine will remain stock.
There are many steering colums used when going different. Part of it depends on the front end, but aftermarket suppliers are abundant. ididit, flaming river, etc.
The length of the culumn needs to be determined before purchasing one thouugh. Your husbands height, the seat being used, and the column drop need to be worked out. Some people use a broom handle and a piece of cardboard to get it close to what feels comfortable.

Joy, I think Deuce is correct. Give a "Gift Card" of some sort. My wife wraps up a hand written note, puts it in a small box and gives it to me at Christmas. She also makes note of what she wants to spend on the gift. That way, I don't go nuts and break the bank. I think your husband is lucky to have someone like you in his life.
