I think your confusing CFM with PSI.
Volume vs. Pressure.
It would work with a convintional gun for a short while but those regulators will not pass enough CFM to satisify a full blown hvlp gun for very long IMO.
Unless you got a railroad car size tank.
I didn't confuse flow vs pressure, but I did forget about restriction at the regulator. That looks like it would probably be the biggest problem.
