Hyd Roller lifters

Can you safely use USED HYD roller lifters with a new cam or does the flat tappet rule apply to rollers too? "New cam, new lifters". Roller lifters are so expensive and my buddy told me I can reuse the old one's, but I have my hesitations. Thanks

If the new cam is a roller cam, yes, you can re-use the lifters,
if the new cam was designed as a flat tappet cam, you'll need
new flat tappets...

Yes you can reuse them, Just inspect them closely for wear. Perry

Agreed. Rollers don't need to establish a wear pattern on the cam like flats do. As long as they're healthy, use at will.

The wear pattern on the old cam was good. Every lobe wear pattern was right in the center. The engine spun a #1 Rod bearing and cut a .050 groove in the crank. There was lots of metal in the pan. Pumping and flushing them in clean oil should prep them for re-installation without worries right?

take them apart and clean them, make sure that the roller does not have any bumps when rolled on your finger that it rolls smoothly.

Clean them up good and use assembly lube and you will be ok. Perry.

Ok, this may sound dumb. When I took the retainer clip out of the lifter, all that came out was the push rod retainer and the small round plate that covers the oil hole below in the top of the lifter. I assumed that a Hyd Roller lifter would act like a Hyd Flat Tappet. There would be some plunger spring effect. They have none. I searched for a cut away view of one so I can see what's going on in there, but I couldn't find anything. There was massive sludge in the second lifter I took apart, so I want to make sure I'm not going to miss anything when I clean and inspect these things. I have stock GM Hyd Roller lifters.
