Good idea; the vise grip has little surface area in contact.
Perhaps:
Clamp nut in a vise; not too tight.
Wrap shaft with tape.
Wrap leather belt on top of tape.
Use a large pipe wrench on top of the leather.
Cooling shaft with compressed O2 will also help.
