Was I being ridiculous?

The gas door on my '98 Ranger is rusted up pretty good, and that was the only rust on the truck... so I went to ford, and ordered a new 1.. then ( because I'v never sprayed BC/CC or any red for that matter ) called a local bodyshop I'v never delt with, but heard good and bad about for a quote.. first quote was $25 to paint the door, IF he had the paint.. well he didn't have the paint, so his quote was $50, to paint the door, and touch up 2 spots on the truck with a brush... gave him the door and said ok, then he said come back next Wednesday.. went back on wednseday only to find he left for florida, and his workers did release the door to me, even tho he did not leave a bill for me, so I did not pay. Upon close inspection after leaving, I noticed a huge run at the bottom, and tons of crud in the clear.. so when I went back to pay, I told him to fix it, and he looked and said they would buff it out, and to come back in a few days.... I went back to get the door... then he asks me what he quoted cause he couldn't remember ( NO BILL ).. I told him $50 for the door and a couple touch ups, and I told him, I didn't require the touch ups, and just wanted the door.. he told me the touch ups were nothing and it would still cost $50.. then he handed me the door, the run was still there, and there was buffing compound stuck to the back of it.. I then mentioned to him, there was a major run on it ( not even mentioning the compound residue ).. he took it and looked at it.. told me to give him $25 because I was being "ridiculous" and that it was " just a gas door " and his guy spent a "lot of time on it".. I gave him $30 and left..

was I being ridiculous?

Someone certainly was being ridiculous but it wasn't you! Just a gas door? What difference does it make if it is a gas door or a fender, a stinking run is still a RUN! Besides if he can't paint something as small and flat as a gas door without runs I sure would hate to have him paint my entire car!

I have always wondered about the "Just a XXX" comment. "Just a piece of crap", yeah I can see that. The whole car is a piece of crap, what is one more flaw? But "just a gas door" makes no sense what so ever.

You were not out of line. The guy isn't a real businessman, no paper work, kinda cheap too, he does crap work, yep, he doesn't have a clue.

Probably gave it to one of the "Junior Associates" in his shop to learn on and now that Jr made a mess out of it he doesn't want to be out more money (time and material)to fix it right. I've seen that before.

The other thing about him, is.. he employs approx 8 guys, none of them look to be older than 25 and most aroud my age. I'm 20 and I don't mean that as a bad thing, but, I'll admit, I have very little experience... oh, and he has no spray booth.... and does general automotive work in the same building/ room as painting ( didn't realise that until he had the door for paint, so it was too late )

No one can judge if he's ridiculous or not because we haven't seen the gas door.

yup, that's what I figured.. he said he mixed a 1/4 pint to do it, and a pint cost $85 ( color 1998 Ford Vermillion Red paint code E4 ).. he said ( b4 he went off on me ) he would give me the extra paint for touch up but they didn't have any left... so being they knew it was screwed up, rather than fix it ( run looks like it's in the base coat ) by getting more paint, and redoing it, they would save the money and hope I didn't complain about the run
