I got to go tractor pulling today...

....and I came home with a sunburn, a $9 top 3 payout, and a yellow ribbon for my 3rd place finish (but I gave that up to the tractor's owner--more on that in a bit). Not bad for my first time out, I suppose. One of my buddies called me up late Saturday afternoon and asked me if I'd be interested in pulling with one of his tractors. He'd pay the entry, and get to keep the ribbon, but the prize money (if I placed) was to be mine. It took me all of about 1 one hundredth of a second to say "so what time do I need to be there??"

Fred (my buddy) is one of the most competitive and hard working farmers I know, and it was a huge deal for me to go and do well for him. He'd have run that tractor himself, but per puller class weight issues, he'd have been in the next class with him on the machine I ran. We were allowed 100 lbs either side of the class weight. I got to run his 1946 Massey Harris 101 Junior in the stock farm 3,500 lb. class (with me on it, it went 3,546 lbs), and Fred pulled his grandfather's Fordson Major in the stock farm 5,500 lb class at a total of 5,584 lbs. I pulled 4th in line in a field of 5, and he pulled 9th in a field of 12. I got 3rd of 5 (pulled 128'-- losing 2nd by 4' and first place by 10'), and Fred placed 4th (after pulling 192'--he lost third place by 1 1/2').

Check the pics.....

In a while, Chet.

One more pic. Blasted file size is too big and my wife is sleeping now, so I'll have to have her resize them so I can post them.

It was a blast. All told, by the time Fred got to hook, they had already run 210 pulls, and it still was going on an hour and a half later. The only bad part was both of his tractors had been sitting for nearly 3 years, and mine had a serious issue with dirt in the gas. It died completely and wouldn't even restart for the 2 mile drive back to Fred's farm. He just chained it, and off we went. All in all though, it was really cool to do. And, it was less pain inducive than a demo derby.

In a while, Chet.

I got 2 more pics to upload, so enjoy..

Cool, I bet you had fun. I love the tractor pulls.
My Grandpa had a Fordson Major Diesel, my Dad traded it on a 60 John Deere several years after Grandpa died. I wish I could find that old tractor.

Fred's is a diesel too, but his grandpa bought it brand new, so it couldn't be the same. I tell you, though, I'd never seen so many early John Deere's, Farmall H's and M's, or Massey Harris's in one place in my life. Kinda made me want to go start farming again....

The old tractors look so cool.
So this is not something you do all the time? Once a year kind of thing? Still, very cool.

Today marked my first time ever. I had gone to 3 other pulls when I was actually farming, but never pulled before. However, I'll be trying to make this a more common activity for me. Fred asked if I was busy next weekend because there's another pull about 45 minutes away from today's pull. I've got a wedding to go to, so that one is out. There is one on Labor Day that sounds like I may be up for, schedule permitting.

In a while, Chet.

Congrats Chet. Keep us WI guys posted if/when you pull again. Maybe we can turn out a rooting section.
