I'm not sure how it is in Cali, but here in Ohio, if you have the correct year plate for the car, you can register the old plate. If you are able to do that where you are and are able to locate a '72 plate in better conidition, you might want to try that? People are selling old plates on ebay all the time. You might even find somone on here that'll give you a pair? I'm not sure about the paint used on the plates though.

Rock on and God bless...

Seņor

P.S. What model Buick are you restoring?

Aren't plates permanently assigned to a vehicle out in Cali? If so, ebay is not much of an option. I'm going to guess your just going to hafta match up the closest color you can if you are using rattle cans. If you opt to spend a bit more, you can get a paint shop to match the paint for you. I know as a fact that painting or altering your plates in anyway is illegal out here in Colorado. That being said, one of my buddies painted the plate on his daily driver white over black, instead of the state issued white over green. They look pretty good too but were alot of work. He's been driving on them for the past 3-4 years now without any hassle. Heck, he's even been pulled over 2-3 times, but no mention of the plates! Either he's really luck or the cops just don't care?!?! Good luck!

Paint Colors

I have a spot on Blue at home. It is a rustoleum color, but I'll have to check it later for you. I used a testors model paint for the yellow.

if the actual color is in good shape , but just faded , try blowing a coat of clear over it. should bring it back nicely.

I didn't know painting a plate was illegal, a few rodders around this area have cut and welded together their own personalized antique plates then painted them the same color as the car and the State of Michigan had no problems approving them for use. All the State requires is a photo of the plate sent in for registration and a one time $25 fee.

It's not illegal. There are a lot of guys who restore antique plates for a living and I'm sure the state appreciates keeping them looking good (and readable!). And in Kalifornia you have the option to use either the stock plates that DMV issues (Kalifornia licenses so many cars they they change the colors all the time - there has been black on yellow, yellow on black, yellow on blue and several versions of colors on white), get personalized ones, customized 'stock' ones (the latter two require a fee - $25/year? - for the tree huggers), or antique plates if they are the year that came on the car. My '36 Willys has been continuously registered under the yellow on black '68 plates I got back then so I can keep them.

Krylon Paint Color

It is.........

Krylon Royal Blue. I suppose that could have been more difficult. Anyway, I resprayed my bike's plate over 2 years ago, never had anyone look at it twice. The color is a shade off, but not very noticable in daylight at all.

Hope that helps a little,

Geoff

Listen, people do it all the time, the cops sure have better things go do than bust people for restored plates, but it IS illegal. You can not do ANYTHING to a California plate, it is considered "modifying" it.

IF, they wanted to ticket you, they could.

But then for that matter, there are 42,700 some odd laws in the California Vehcle code book. If they can't find one to give you a ticket for there are blank pages at the end where the cop can write a new one.

Find someplace that can color match each color and see if they can mix something like a 1 or 2 ounce touch-up bottle, and see if you can find some reflective additive similar to what they use in the paint used to mark the lines on roadways. I know of NO legal license plate that does not contain the reflective additive in any state.
