I met two legends in one day, and had a bunch of fun.

Well, let's see. I walked in the gates as soon as they opened and..........

I saw Ron Hope and Dave Hough so I walked over and said Hi, they were shocked to know that a "kid" like me even remembered them, nevermind recognizing them. For those of you that don't know, Ron drove the "Rat Trap" AA/FA. That's fuel altered, think 2500hp T-Bucket. Dave drove the "Nanook" fuel altered. I got invited to walk around and shoot the breeze, I just listened. I wish my gramps could've been with me. The stories they told about racing altereds were nuts. I think you had be a little crazy just to drive one of the things so I don't think they were blowing smoke up my rear. I walked around and listened for about two hours, could've been 2 minutes for all I know. I was rubbing elbows with legends. They asked me if I raced and I told 'em about my Nova and where I race. Ron said, "Heads up is racing is racing, brackets let lots of folks compete but they ain't real real races." Dave agreed. I've never been more proud to be a part of the "Test-N-Tune" crew, that's what the bracket racers at my track call us 'cause we don't do bracket racing on Sundays. I thanked 'em for letting me hang out with them and listen. I didn't get any autographs, I don't need 'em. I have memories. I swear I could hear the sound ball bearings clacking when those two were walking off.

The rest of the day.

I met Cruz and Tony Pedregon. They gave me a Pedregon Racing shirt and signed it. I talked to Cruz for quite a bit. He's a nice fella.

Tommy Johnson Jr. came by the hospitality tent and chatted for a while. I got a connecting rod from one of his explosions, the thing is HUGE, and he signed it.

John Force rode his minibike through the hospitality tent at a high rate of speed cackling like deranged hillbilly. Some chick was chasing him with a camera in one hand and a tube of lipstick in the other.

I got a nose full if nitro when Doug Kalitta's crew was test firing the engine. I couldn't breath, I could barely see for my eyes burning..... it was the greatest thing that could ever happer happen to a nitro junkie like me. 8 feet away from the zoomies and they blip the throttle, dang near blew me down and I loved it. I did it 3 more times yesterday.

A whole day of kick arse racing and half naked honeys, courtesy of Georgia heat, and meeting a couple of legends. Yesterday was the best.

Larry

Here's a few pictures I took, sorry there's not more but I was busy having fun.

Check out the size of that blower. That's Joe Elmore from Horsepower TV in the background. He's pretty funny in person.

Cruz' car minus the top end. I got to hang out in the pit area for a while.

Cruz' car 10 minutes later. These dudes have it down.

Kalitta's dragster. Make a note of the direction the headers are pointed.

The picture just doesn't tell the story of how violent the exhaust is. It's like a hurricane, earthquake and supersonic boom all at once.

Here's the engine in Hubert Platt's "Georgia Shaker". That was a nice car. Too bad they didn't have it out in the open ofr better pics.

Here's a shot of a couple of sweetie pies. They were among the more conservatively dressed.

Heres the shirt that Ron ain't gonna get. Signed by the brothers. Too bad Frank wasn't anywhere around or I'd have hit him up for a signature too.

The autograph on the left is Don Garlits. That cap might get retired early 'cause it won't ever get washed again. Garlits is my all time favorite. Check out the size of that rod. It's gigantic compared to any other rod I've ever seen.

Well that's about it fellas. I had a blast

I'd love to go back today but I'm too poor to buy the tickets. Yesterday's were freebies from the parts house. It's raining anyway. Nitor is one thing but all that hot asphalt and water's going to make it miserable. I'll watch the finals on tv.

Larry, it sounds like you had just about a perfect day, it doesn't get much better than that. Nothing I know of can compare to the brute force of a nitro burning top fuel car. AWESOME! Force is a hoot, he's having the time of his life and he knows it. I hope he quits talking of retirement for a few more years. I'll catch them on the boob tube this afternoon. Dan
