I need advice on 69 Ranger 9" rear end replacement

I have a 1969 Ford Ranger. The rearend is ready to fly to pieces. I have the 9" rearend w/ a 3.73 gear. I also came into possesion of an 1984 Econoline van with an 9' rear end. Not sure which one but the id# is s704b and its 31 spline. Can I make it work? I found a place that sells a 31 spline axle that can be cut to length.

Are you sure it's 31-Spline?
What are you wanting to use the Housing or swap Guts into your Housing?

Yes I am positive on the spline count. I counted like five times hoping that I was counting wrong, lol. I want the guts out of the van housing to put in my truck. My idea is that I can use the third member out of the van. I found a cut to length axle that has like 10" of the shaft splined. They even sell the bearing that works with my rearend housing. Then I will have the 31 spline 9" rearend (hopefully). Then I can save the dough to buy a new posi-trac limited slip rearend. I'm curious if I'm going about this the right way. I'm working with limited funds so I wanna try to do it step by step. Two axles are cheaper than a new rearend. Plus with the axles being cut to length I wont have to buy new axles when I go to put a little more rubber on the road by shortening the rearend housing. Am I on the right track?
