I really doubt that the 5-30 is really considered a flat tappet oil as I can see why you had all that damage to your engine with the oil and filters you are using and the oil today is a lot different then 43 years ago.
You may want to listen to some of us guys who build engines for a living and have some pretty good advice to follow.
The problems your having we don't seem to have so I would say your doing something wrong.
This would differ, on how complete the engine came to him. If it came "fully dressed" oil pan to intake manifold, He has a complaint. If not, I don't think he would have started this thread.
