I need a spindle for a 47 Ford pickup
I was coming home at 0230 this morning and a wining started in the front end. I slowed down to about 20 mph and something popped. As I stopped the front drivers side wheel popped off. After towing the rig home I discovered that the outer wheel bearing seized up and the spindle snapped off just before the threads. Well I am thankfull to be alive and thankfull there was no further damage but I am pissed. I need help locating a new stock spindle for a 1947 Ford pickup. Does anyone know where I can find one. If I have to buy a pair of drop spindles I will but I would rather just replace the one.

I believe a 42 to 48 car spindle is the same ... but I could be WRONG :embarrass

I would call Dick Spadaro ... he sells parts, is very knowledgeable and most of all HELPFUL.

I have a couple pair of 48 to 52 F1 spindles but I do not know if they are the same as yours. I just started messing with the newer stuff ( like late 40's ) recently.

Here is my current project.

It is a 1949 Mercury 1/2 ton pickup.
Only available when new in Canada. :)

Deuce is correct, the 42 to 48 car spindle is the same. The F1 spindle is different.

The spindle is stamped "21A" I have to start looking around.

The spindle and the axle appear to be one piece. how does this thing come off?

I got a new spindle but I can't get the old one off. Does anyone know a trick to removing the kingpin?

I got the kingpin out and the spindle off the axle but I can't get the spindle off of the steering arm. It is a ball joint connection. Does this need to be pressed out?

You need a pickle fork ... a special tool made for separating the two.!B1rtq7QEWk~...cbFkDN!_12.JPG

Most of the chain-type parts stores ( Auto Zone/ Advance / O'Reilys ) have a tools loaner program and they have this tool in that program ( usually )

They are not that expensive to buy ( I have a old Snap-On one that I got a a yard sale 20/25 years ago for 5 dollars. If you were close ... I would let you borrow it :thumbup:

Not sure about that newer style king pin, but most have a locking mechanism, such as a bolt into a grove/dimple in the king pin. Remove that an it should come out relatively easy. A new king pin and bushings should be in order as well.

ALSO ... the tie rod end will screw out of the drag link. They come in right hand threads and left hand threads ... depending on which side they are installed. They are available new ... for mot much $$$. I believe I would consider replacing them ... while you are this close.

I finally found some time and completed the job. just one thing odd though the new bearing/grease seal and nut will not go onto the spindle enough so I can put the cotter pin back in the axle. I am assuming the little rust that is on the new spindle is causing this. I am thinking if I drive around for a bit then try to tighten the nut, maybe the surface rust will waer off.
I am certain the new spindle is the exact one I need but the diameter of the axle is slightly enlarged by the rust.
Any comments?

Next project I have to adjust the drum brakes. What is the best way to do this front or back first?

Normally you would clean any rust off the spindle before assembly. If you didn't, take it back apart and do it now. Also repack the bearings.

Bonus thought,the old kingpin makes a great drift/driver. don't chuck it. the old skool way to pop it was to take 2 large hammers place one against the back of the stud hole and whack from the other side,just be sure to wear eye protection! :thumbup: tom
