I went into the old house on the other farm to look at some doors I had stored in it years ago. I got two steps into the house and the floor collapsed under my left foot and I went down up to my hip. I had my left leg dangling in the basement and my right leg on the ground floor. I sat there for a while worried that I had just broken my new right hip but I didn't feel any pain in that location but my right big toe did kind of hurt. I just kept remembering the Dr,s instructions that I couldn't fall and doing so could produce disastrous results. My uncle got knocked down by a dog and broke one of his new hips nad had to have it redone so I am very wary of doing this. I here it is a lot worse the second time around and it was bad enough the first time! I managed to hoist myself out of the hole which wasn't any fun at all but I did manage to do it without calling 911 to rescue me. I crawled the short distance to the door fearing further floor collapses and managed to right myself once I was outside. I found that standing and walking produced quite a bit of pain in my right big toe. I sat down, called my wife and told her that I thought I had broken my toe. She asked me if I wanted to go to the Dr and I told her that I didn't. I think that I'll just wait and see how it is in the morning. It's all swelled up and nasty looking now.

For some reason people seem to think broken toes are hilarious - they are not!
I broke every toe on my left foot back in University days - silly story. Actually I did NOT break my big toe- just the other 4. Problem is - there isn't really anything they can do for you! After the X-rays, they came back in and said (something to effect of) "Congratulations, stupid! 4 at once!" , and gave me some painkillers.

Here is what ya gotta watch out for: After a couple of weeks, they are well on the way to healing and they stop hurting and that's when you actually DO get stupid. I re-broke 'em several times - tripped on a curb (OUCH!) Start over with the healing, About 3 weeks later, I tried to get something off a top shelf - stood on tiptoe. Felt mucho pain accompanied by the crunch sound of biting into celery. Start over with the healing. (etc) It was actually about 4 months before they were fully healed.

Crash, I was waiting for the punch line here when I realized you were serious. Something like " Honey, I think you need to call a toe (tow) truck.... There's really nothing that can be done for a broken toe, other than putting the entire foot in a cast to save wear and tear. Cold water to bring swelling down, warm or hot later to ease the pain. Be gentle to the toe.

I've broken my little toes 3 different times, once someone dropped a sledge hammer on one and the other two times I rammed them into something walking around the house barefoot. I have felt your pain.

They do have this "sandal" they give (sell to your insurance company) you. It is basically a contoured board with a canvas top to keep you from flexing your toes. Pretty much a waste of time.

Broken or badly sprained: same problem. You will find that big toe is going to just be a magnate for ever bump, stump, or lump within 10 feet of it and will figure out how to come in contact it with them. A good sturdy steel toe boot will serve you well since you are not the kind of guy to sit around with your foot propped up on a pillow waiting for it to get well. I feel your pain since I have "been there; done that".

Broke my big toe once and that was the worse night of my entire life - - - - - better go ahead and start on the drugs if you plan on sleeping any tonight - - - - good luck with it !

I not only broke my left big toe, I shattered the bone length wise in several pieces when I slipped toe first off a carpeted step onto a tile floor. 200 pounds over 7" equals a heluva lot of force. That was in Dec 1986. I still have pain when the weather makes a big change quickly, occasionally it locks up - and woe to anyone that steps on it even now . The worst part, we had a 12" snowstorm, I still had to plow out my 800 foot drive, the office Xmas party was that day, which I did attend for a few minutes on the way to the e-room, then had to wait for hours while doctors fixed fingers of several folks who thought they could clear a snow blower blockage by hand. Crutches for 2 weeks plus I was working out of town.

So, with that said, Crash I hope you have a quicker and total recovery and didn't hurt your new hip

take care of it and stay off it or you'll get an infection called Toeleo, it can work it's way up to you knee and develop into Kneezeles and in some severe cases it can work its way up and you can also get Small Cox....so just take it easy and stay off it.

I dropped a 475# drill rod on my foot once upon a time. Broke my little toe and found it wasn't so little after a while, hurt a wee bit too.
Hope you have a speedy recovery, be cautious and watch out for the dreaded Small Cox.
