ID my transmission please

I have a 1987 GMC S-15 4x4 2.8L V-6. The tranny is the 700-r4 and it is shot. Every thing that I'm reading in my limited library says that the 700r4 and the 4L60 are the same transmission. So I bought a used transmission from a person who said that it was a 4L60. After pulling my shot transmission, I have discovered that bell housings are not the same at all. I am having trouble identifying the transmission that I bought. I have figured out that it is electronically controlled. The Haynes Tech book I have tells me how to read the code on my bad transmission which is 7TA M-Y-00023276114C. It doesn't tell me how to read the code on the other one which is 3T AD041W. Can anybody tell me what I have here and if there is anyway I can make this work?

The trans in the 87 uses the small belhousing for rear wheel drive 2.8 narrow V engines. The trans you bought is for 4.3 thru 350 Engine.
No way that there is any interchange. Aside from belhousing mis-match, the 4L60 is computer controlled which your 700R4 is not.

Thanks. Probably no way the internal parts could be interchanged either I assume?

The 92 4L60 was just a 700R4 with new name.Beginning in 93 came the 4L60E which is electonically controlled.I doubt any of the internals would interchange.A 4L60E will have M30 on the bellhousing.I would look into havin your current trans rebuilt vs buyin used, unless of course you know & trust the seller.

As far as reading the codes,if the tranny you bought is a later model 4L60E, it is probably an OBD2 system. You original tranny being an 87 is OBD1. OBD2 requires the use of an OBD2 scan tool.

The transmission that you bought is a 1993 4L60-E from behind a 4.3L engine.

All of the gearing interchanges. Case, pump, drums, and valve body do not. 700 output shaft fits 4L60-E but not vice versa.

The 4L60 is EXACTLY the same as a 700-R4 and is not computer controlled. The 4L60-E (like he bought) is computer controlled.

I know some of the internals from the 700,4L60,4L60E will interchange.I think the OP wuz questioning if they will interchange with his current 87 small bellhsg.trans,or,does he actually have a 700R4 with in a differnt case.I'm not familiar with the 87 trans he currently has?

What I stated applies to all 700 versus 4L60-E parts for any year.

The only difference between his 87 V6 700 and a 87 V8 700 is the case, torque converter, and input shaft. And, of course, the calibration of the valve body and other hydraulic control parts.
