ID a quadrajet

I'm told the 68 firebird I bought had an engine swap with a 400 GTO engine from '71. It has an appropriate engine marking 'YS'. But there was a 'YS' for the 350 engine ealier years.

Anyway, I need a carb float and carb rebuild gasket kit. I looked up kits for the 68 bird and 71 gto. They are different kits and I don't know which I have.

It's marked with 7040262 on the main body casting, but I'm thinking that only identifies that housing. The ID tag is black and no hint of an ID number.

Any help is much appreciated!

Look on the driver's side of the block near the front, just behind the fuel pump. Many Pontiac V8's have the displacement cast into the block in this area.

The number on the side of the carb is the carb ID number. How to speak Rochester: http://bellsouthpwp.net/p/a/padgett46/roch.htm says yours is a carb from a '70 model Pontiac car with automatic trans.

Carb ID

Use the 7040262 # at your parts store and they will get you the kit & float you need. Most go by the #'s and not what vehicle or engine you have.

Quadrajet dilemma

Parts guy sold me a Hygrade (Standard Motor Products) kit 574A and float FL1. This for a 7040262 carb apparantly from a 70 pontiac.

The kit instructions (who reads them?) show fuel entering from the passenger side while the carb has the fuel entering from the front.

Neither Hygrade nor SMP have a parts crossreference on their web site, or I've missed it.

Can anyone tell me if this is the correct kit? And if you know, where did you find this info on the web?
