I think that only you can answer this question really. What do you like? It's your car and in then end you will be the one enjoying it most.
This will be an interesting poll though, I voted traditional, but I would look for little ways to make it stand out from the crowd, put an interesting engine in it. You say it's a '48, a '48 Ford? Chevy? Buick? what?
Maybe go for a neo retro look, a modern take on a traditional theme, this kind of thing can be difficult to pull off. It takes some real creativity and knowing just how much of what is enough, it's a very artistic thing that would require a real sense of aesthetic balance and subtlety but it would definitely get you noticed.
