identifying heads for refreshing

so just read post on melted pistons, great responses..putting together mild 350 for cruising and running [rv] cam and was considering vortec heads but not now! but I am curious has anyone heard of earlier 194 heads that were poor castings with not only rough runners but a cracking history? and do the rebuild able heads I got with this project fall into that classification#462824?
