Identifying rear end

i have 49 chevy truck that the rear end gasket is leaking. It has 12 bolts but it is not a 12 bolt as i know The 12 bolts are to the yoke side and the back is smooth like a ford 9" The only numbers I can read on the rear end is GM22

Second question is the gasket hard to change. It looks like the whole front comes off.

Lets try this again. It was late last night and the meds must of kicked in.

It has 10 bolts not 12 as I had Posted. Anyway using a wire brush I was able to read the numbers off of the rear end.

The numbers are K11 GM22
3725899

I'm concerned about taking the front off to replace the gasket. Its just not a cover. I would think if i pulled the front off then something has to come apart.

Any help would be appreciated.

Mark

Sounds like the 55-64 Chevy rear, similar in look to a 9" Ford. Centersection comes out the front, it isn't just a cover, it is the entire differential assembly - ring, pinion, carrier, bearings and yoke. You have to pull the axles to remove the centersection to replace the housing to centersection gasket.

The truck rear end is a little different from the car rear end. The truck rear end has a cover on the back that also comes off, but I don't know why. It seems kind of pointless to me. If you take the cover off and take the chunk out of the front you can see all the way through the housing.

Thanks for the reply.
It seems to be a 55 to 64 type rear end.
It is most likely to be a 61 with what I can find using the casting numbers
I will pull the axle and remove the front and put a new gasket on it
What gear oil do you recommend?
