Identifying Vortec from non-Vortec engines?

How do I tell the difference between the non-Vortec and Vortec long blocks? Picked up a 4.3 long block, no electrics, etc. Was told it came out of a mid 90's AWD Astro van.

There is much confusion when it comes to 4.3 engines. The problem started in the 80`s when GM gave them the name "Vortec" However, the real and desireable vortec heads didn`t come along until 1996, the same thing goes for small blocks as well. The 80`s to 1995 engines were nothing special, they were just run of the mill smoggers with big chamber smogger heads. The real Vortecs have a unique 8 bolt pattern that`s straight up instead of slanted like the older designs, they also have heart shaped 64cc combustion chambers and slightly slanted and taller intake ports.
