id'ing a ford 9 inch with disk brakes
Hey all,
Im gonna start heading to local junkyards to see if I can find a ford 9" with disk brakes. Any one have a resource with serial numbers/pictures, so ill know it for sure when I see it? Thanks Mike |

Drop out center section. Bottom nut will only take wrench, no socket. Beware the 8.8. It will take a socket.

You'll be looking for a late seventies LINC VERSAILES, FORD GRANADA or MERC MONARCH (last two hi-trim) to find a complete asm.
Also seventies big LINCS will have rear disc with the 9". What are you retrofitting? |

it's going to be going into a 1970 mustang, it was equipped with a 9" before, but i'd like to go to a disk setup, and will be installing either a 3 link w/ coil overs or a triangulated 4-link with coil overs.
It seems like it would probly be easier to find one with disks then to convert the one i have, seems pretty hard to find a good kit for it at a reasonable price. Mike |

Hi Pigman,
Nice name, I'm also a farmer, Walnuts, Apples and Cherries, here in the central San Joaquin Valley of Calif. I'm putting AirRide bags on a '48 F1 PU that I bought in '63 from the original owner and has been stored since then. I switched the rear springs from the outside of the frame to the inside to give more room to mount the bags. What I need is a set of flanges that go under the axle and that the spring u-=bolts go through to hold the springs to the axle. The plate I'm looking for also has a shock mount on it. I saw that you're going to change to a 9" rear end which has a 3" tube so I was wondering if you would consider selling your old one as it is 2.5"? |

I used to buy driving Versailles and swap out the disc 9" and install a Granada 8 " (a direct drop in) and then resell the car for as much as I paid for it. Another thing to consider is the 80 Monarch high-line, some had 9 in disc brakes, some had the 8.8 (yes, an 8.8 on leaf springs) though I have seen only two. The Versailles rear end has been popular, though the brake repair parts are hard to find (but getting better), not as well designed as aftermarket, and the failure prone parking brake lever has not yet been reproduced as far as I know. If you can find a good set up, do it. If not, spend the $ 700 on a good aftermarket set up. Also the Versailles is 57 1/2 inches wide which is excellent for the 70 Mustang because it is 2 inches narrower (depending on which 70 stang, yes they varied) which gives you more tire clearance. 9 inch rear ends have two different bolt patterns (3 if you count the trucks) that hold the wheel bearing/axle into the housing, so obviously the disc set up must match those. Be careful too, if adapting a disc set up onto your existing rear end, that the distance the axle wheel face is from the end of the housing varies, and some factory disc set ups that bolt to your housing will not place the caliper in the proper place with your axles. All in all.... go aftermarket if you absolutely need the disc brake "look". You say you are spending $$$ changing the rear suspension, but don't know to what type, so obviously you don't know what purpose you are going to use the car for or do not understand suspensions. I don't know why you would want to change the rear suspension anyway, the leaf set up is excellent and needs only minor tweaking to do whatever any street car needs. Since you have the money to change all that, the price of the discs brakes should not be a consideration anyway. Just being realistic. Last edited by xntrik : 07-31-2005 at 01:05 PM. The only factory 9 inch with discs comes off the 70s Mark 4 amd 5 and some big town cars. You might use it under a 70 mustang with some special wheel off set but as mentioned it will be too wide, and it will have the 5 on 5 pattern, not the 4 1/2.
The 8.8 is a rear loader and is easy to tell from an 8 or 9 inch. Really the 8.8 from a Versailes would be a fairly stout rear end unless you want to run like niteous and slicks. You might consider an Explorer rear end brake set up converted to your existing axle. I have seen how-to articles on this conversion. |

9in disk
if you want a stock set of disk brakes, i have a set off of a 1977 (as i was told) Lincoln, with two brand new rotors, car bolt pattern of 5 on 4 1/2.
the calipers need rebuilding, the rotors have never been used, comes with mounting brackets, complete set, you supply the bolts. i would have to get the length of the axles shafts they are 28 spline but can sell them to you if you like. packnrat packnrat@lycos.com |
