Idiot lights not working...

Well I lied my generator light is working, when i turn the key to start only my generator idiot-light lights up. When i ground the wire (on the block) going to my oil and temp sending unit the lights then illuminate on the dash. Does this mean that I have bad temp and oil sending units? My temperature one never worked, and my oil one just quit out on my out of nowhere.
Thanks
Mark
