idle problem

O.K. this is what happened, I came off the freeway and my idle seemed to be stuck at around 1600, so I stepped on it a couple of times and put it in park and back into gear and walla it dropped back down to 700. This is the second time this has happened to me in the last month, I checked the distributor and my throttle linkage and everything seems to be just fine.
Im running a 302 with a road demon carb and a newly rebuilt 89 AOD with about 4000 miles on it, so what do you guys think, any ideas are greatly appreciated.
thank's, Devin

What kind of carb is it? If it's a Holley, sometimes when the throttle shafts get old they don't return to their idle position the same each time. That will cause the idle speed to vary. It might also be your fast idle somehow sticking or holding open the throttle shafts. It would be a good idea to get a good dual throttle return spring if you don't already have one.

When you looked at the distributor did you check to see if the advance weights were sticking or the return springs were ok?
