Idle RPM

Newly rebuilt 302 carb engine. I can get it to idle down to about 850/900 in Park. Is that low enough? The timing is being set "by ear" but I do have a light. Any lower and it dies or starts to surge. Also, I'm not sure if the valves are set properly (I think I forget to extra 1/2 turn but no clatter). Would that affect idle? Thanks everyone,

The Vandal
