If I cut a coil spring

This kinda goes along with the spring height question I had. I got in touch with Eaton Spring and they told me the proper free height should be 13 7/16". Now thats not a problem but I was just told not to cut the coil springs because if I do it will change the spring rate. This really does not make sense to me because I'm not changing the diameter, temper or anything else on the springs just the height. I checked the knowledge base but couldn't find what I was looking for. Anyone have any idea on this??

Thanks
David
