ignition issue?

I have a small block chevy 350 with a Summit electronic Dist with mechanical advance and a MSD 6AL, Analog CD ignition box
I have been having a issue with trying to time this in that it will run but with a timing light hooked up it shows about 40 degrees advanced at idle even after setting the up with a the #1 piston at tdc and the rotor pointing at #1 .
the mechanical advance seems to be fine , With the timing light hooked up the flash of the light seems to skip once in a while and can be felt in the idle , When driving it has just died and is hard to get restarted , it cranks but acts like there is no spark , on hard acceleration around 4500 rpm in any gear it seems to sputter but keeps pulling .
In the Distributer the magnetic pickup visually looks ok but (I am not sure i have the correct name for this) but the Trigger for with for the pickup is heavly corroded . Can this corrosion be causing this ? is there supposed to be a set clearance for trigger and pickup ?
thanks for any help i can get .
Jim

Seems like you are way far advanced. Turned the distributor (during idle) until you are down to something like 16' timing. Make sure the vac advance hose is remoced and also check that the mech advance weights arent stuck.
