Ignition - No Spark

I have an MSD Distributor, Mallory HyFire VIa ignition, and Promaster coil. I have the ignition wired correctly according to the book and verified through a test procedure independent of the distributor. The magnetic pick-up on the distributor checks out with ohm resistance well within spec. The ignition is wired correctly to the dizzy with correct pos and neg hook-up. When I crank the engine I do not get any spark from a grounded plug. The dizzy does spin and with a good mag pick-up I should get spark at the coil – I don’t.

While I do get 12 volts at the ignition wire with the ignition in the “on” position, it does drop to 5.5 v when I crank the motor…not sure if this could be my issue or something else?? I appreciate any advice!

Are you sure that your frame is properly grounded? How about your motor, too? Very important! Hopefully you are not using a ballast resistor.

Try to simplify

Try to eliminate the Hyfire box by taking it out of the picture. Mine is causing me similar problems. Simplify and then see where you are from there.

If still no spark, you may have a bad module inside the distributor. Suggest having a spare on hand anyway.

You need to have battery voltage while cranking. At 5.5 volts the coil is not "charged up", and it will not spark. Your ignition will also require battery voltage while cranking.
