i'm just throwing this out here, pt.3:

i'm just throwing this idea out here because i was flipping channels and had the unfortunate circumstance of watching the show "pinks" which disgusts and irritates me.

Feel free to condemn, criticize, or augment this idea.

Could a device like the following work:

A device would be fashioned such that there would be a tube (or tubes if dual exhaust) to fit over a car's exhaust pipes---much like emmissions testing. OR a tube that could fit inside headers (if the car runs open headers).

NOTE: there would be adapters to be able to be compatable with the many different exhaust configurations from car to car.

These tubes would measure exhaust flow (total airflow) coming out of the engine.

Then, could there be some sort of sensor/"optical gun" that can measure engine revolutions? i'm thinking the operator would put a chalkmark on the engine's crankshaft pulley.

The pipes and "optical sensor" would both be connected to a cpu and would be able to determine cubic inches fairly accurately----total flow based on a certain number of engine revolutions.

Then, the car is weighed on a scale----a fairly quick procedure. From this info, we would divide cubic inches by weight and be able to assign handicaps based on this.

Essentially what i'm trying to do come up with a fast way to determine cubic inches so as to have more of a non-breakout type racing while being fair as possible. i think the pinks format is compete horse product and have no idea why the show is so popular; It's just lame. Also, while i'm not opposed to bracket racing in general i don't think it should be the "only game in town."

I am no engine design expert but wouldn't valve timing and cam overlap change the "exhaust flow"? Also, header and exhaust pipe design could also play a huge role in the exhaust flow. I would think between the two one given CID on two motors would provide wildly different exhaust flow with the same given RPM.

There are devices to check volume on one cyl thru the spark plug aren't there?

Maybe my last post has the answer, I would think if you pulled one plug and rotated the crank a revolution you could measure the volume of that one cyl, then multiply that by the amount of cylinders? I don't know if such a beast exists or if I am dreaming that it could even be done, it makes sense to me.

Well yes, there are P+G testers that do just that. But the problem is when you have 100-200+ cars showing up at an event, this will probably take too long. That's why i'm trying to come up with an expedient solution (as if i could). i suffer from magical thinking too much.
