Self destruct after being taken out of the car? I think they were pulling your leg.

I would have to do some checking but I think the new belts have an automatic tensioning device on them to tighten them in an accident..It is controlled from the air bag circuit so when the air bags go off the seat belts tighten..
Like I say I would need to do the homework on this one.. Now there are lots of options for belts so I bet one can find something suitable.. Sam

no, not at all.. wrecking yard is right.. a lot of newer cars have gas charged belts that tighten up with the gas and are 1 time use.. just like air bags, unhooking them wrong will end up actavating the system. while they will not implode, they will be rendered useless afterword

Check with a company called Julianos.com. Nice product and price.

And new instead of used or abused. I've always run salvaged seat belts but am probably going to the new aftermarket ones the next time I build the truck as mine are over 30 years old now.

In my limited experience I've found new 3-point belts cheaper to buy new than to get at a wrecking yard. They look better, come with a guarantee, and are shipped right to my door (no running around to find them). Maybe it's just our local junk yards are overpriced but I'd go new if it was my choice.
