to improve or get new

i got a '64 chevelle with a 283 bored to a 305. I wanted more hp so i was gonna put a supercharger and put a msd ignition. i was planning on spending about 5 grand. should i just go with a new crate engine?

You could build/buy a nice 383 or 406 for 5 grand.

I probably wouldn't do any of those, I would pick up a 454 and rebuild, then install it in there.

ya thats what i was looking at too, but am i gonna match hp with that even if i had the supercharger on the 305?

I would build a nice solid 383 small block and but in a 150 shot of giggle gas. You'll have more power, be able to build it a little cheaper and it will last a lot longer.
